The Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland joins the Mandela family, the people of South Africa, and millions of admirers around the world in mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela. A man of extraordinary wisdom, compassion, and bold leadership, Mandela inspired, and will continue to inspire people in every corner of the globe.
President Mandela honored the Sadat Chair and the University of Maryland community by delivering the Sadat Lecture for Peace in November 2001, before an audience of 10,000 admirers. As the nation was reeling from the horror of 9/11, and while the university itself was recovering from the impact of a painful tornado that resulted in death and destruction, Mandela’s presence and words were healing and memorable. He touched us all, and left the world—and the University of Maryland—a better place.
